Tribes of Muriwhenua

This week I have been creating a slide about the tribes of Muriwhenua. There is Te Rarawa, Te Aupori, Ngai Takoto, Ngati Kuri and Ngati Kahu. My favorite part was finding the answers for all of the questions. 

Fire saftey

This week I was creating a poster about fire safety. My favorite part was writing/drawing everything onto the cartridge. My 3 main points about fire safety were, checked your fire alarms, stop, drop and get out and call 111. 

The naming of Te Hapua

For the past few weeks, I have been working on an animation to re-tell the story of how Te Hapua got its name. It was firstly named Te Hopua meaning - a large pond, and then it was changed to Te Hapua meaning - a depot.    

Google docs ninja challenge

In the past few weeks, we have been doing our ninja challenge. I learned a lot of new things like hot to use add-ons, and add hyperlinks. I found creating a table of contents challenging, and my favorite part was adding an add-on.

2018 camp

In week 3 of term 4, rooms 3 and 4 went to camp, in Whangaruru at a place called The Farm. We were there for 4 days, it was so fun, we learned a lot of new games. We even did motorbike riding, mud runs, kayaking, horse riding, raft building, night games, and even more fun activities.

About me

For reading, I have made a little slideshow with some things about me. I am interested in, sports, the outdoors, farming, and motorbike riding.

The tsunami

Last term for writing, I wrote a story off pobble 365. First I had to find an image that I could write about them I came up with some ideas and put it into a story. This story is about a girl and her family who were in a tsunami. Next time I would like to try and write a story with more detail, and I found putting all my ideas into a story challenging. 

The tsunami

It was 7:00 o’clock in the morning, I woke up to a loud siren. I had heard that siren before it was a tsunami warning. I woke my family up, and we went to grab the pets and packed as much as we could. We quickly rang some family and friends as we hopped in the car to make sure they knew there was a tsunami warning going off and for them to leave as soon as possible.

We rushed to the car and drove as fast as we could, mum turned on the radio so we could hear the news. “All people evacuate their homes now a tsunami is approaching,” the reporter said. As we entered the city there was traffic everywhere, horns were going off, people were running around, there were even people driving on the footpath.

 It had been an hour of ongoing traffic. Mum turned on the radio we were told the tsunami was arriving real soon. So we all started freaking out. We had just got onto the bridge, “oh no,” said Dad, “what's wrong,” I asked, “we are too late it is here”. The giant wave was forming, “I love you”, were the last words I said. I can only remember seeing my parents drift away unconscious.

And that was my experience with a tsunami. My pets and I were the only ones who survived, but those memories will always be in my mind. I laid down on the couch with my dog next to me and my cat lying in front of the fire. I switched on the TV and put on the news, all I heard was, “everyone leave now - a tsunami is coming!”

My animation

I have created my own animation slideshow, I had to come up with a storyline and then add images that were related to my story. Now we have moved on from persuasive and now we are moving on to narratives. My story is about a pink bird named Violet who goes on a little adventure.

Garden meme

In class, we have been working on making a garden meme for reding. The words we used had to be related to gardens and we had to come up with the memes ourselves. My favorite part was coming up with the meme.

Garden quote

In class, we have been working on making a quote about gardens. I found coming up with the start was the easiest part, but the most challenging part for me was coming up with the ending.
 

Book review

In class, we have been making a book review slide for a book we have read. My favorite part was answering the questions and the part I found most hard was making a character web.

Gender pay gap

In class, we have been presenting our speeches in front of the class. I found getting the ideas for each paragraph difficult. My favorite part was putting my speech together and finishing it. 

My speech

Across the world, women and men work the same jobs, perform the same tasks - yet they are not paid the same wage. Men have dominated high paid jobs for a long time, but for no other reason than because they are men. Does this seem fair and should the gender pay gap still exist in a modern time when women and men should be treated the same? A change needs to happen, and fast.

In the past, a big share of the gender pay gap was due to a cause such as differences in education, the activity, and businesses that men and women work in, or the fact that women are more likely to work part-time. We now know these causes only explain around 20 percent of the ongoing gender pay gap. The majority of the gender pay gap is now led by what the research calls “unexplained” causes. These are the harder to measure factors- impacting negatively on women’s recruitment and payment growth - and differences in men’s and women’s choices and behaviors.

There are still deeply held social attitudes and beliefs about the types of work that are appropriate for men and women dominate and the share of unpaid work, like caring for children and housework. These attitudes affect not only the choices men and women make around paid and unpaid work but also the behaviors of others toward men and women who make choices that are not logical with these traditional beliefs. Differences in behaviors and choices can include men and women’s willingness to access payment and conditions and whether employers may treat women differently from men.   

Women and men have different patterns of participation in the paid workforce because women spend a greater proportion of their time on unpaid and caring work than men. When women take career breaks or work part-time it can affect their careers. Fewer higher-level positions are available on a part-time basis. When women work part-time, they are more likely to miss out on more challenging work and professional development opportunities - both of which increase a person's chance of advancement. When women sacrifice their time to take care of loved ones it is hard for them to get back on track and they have to then work part-time. Do you think that it is fair that they don’t get paid the same amount for the sacrifice they have made?

The gender pay gap is getting smaller but not equally fair. Not all men go out and work while the women stay home and take care of the kids. Although in the past there have been great differences in men’s and women’s choices about paid and unpaid work, and the attitudes and beliefs of paying people equally - it should not be the case now or in the future. If women and men do exactly the same job, they should be paid exactly the same.

Plastics

This term we created a slide show about plastics. We had a tic tac toe sheet and we had to fill in the boxes with a fact from a book, we had to do three books. What are your thoughts on plastic?
My favorite part was making the backgrounds and the hardest part was having to find all the facts of every book.

My 10 favorite books

As part of Book Week last week, we had summarised our 10 favorite books to read. For each book, we had to write down what the book was about, who the author is and who illustrated it. I enjoyed doing the theme for every slide and the most challenging part was to summarise each book. What books do you enjoy reading?

My flash fiction

Last term we were working on our flash fictions for our writing. A flash fiction is a story that has you going from the present to the past then back to the present. We had to add in the words letter, rose, and chain into the story. 

I enjoyed writing all my ideas down then putting them into a story. The hardest thing to do was to come up with what my story was going to be about.

My best friend

We were eating lunch on the table, I looked up to the shelf on the other side of the kitchen and on it was a letter I got 4 years ago from my best friend Zoey before her and her family moved away. I started to think about all those times we had together. I stood up and told my parents I was going for a walk along the beach. The beach was Zoey's favorite place. While I was walking along the shore side I saw a chain bracelet sitting on the shore. I ran and picked it up; it was one like Zoey’s. I took it home with me and put it on my bed. I went to my desk and started writing a letter to her.

After I had finished writing the letter I flashed back to the time when we had our last sleepover together. Our day began with pancakes and hot chocolate. Then we went into my room and danced around to music. We walked down to the beach and built a little hut out of sticks. We started to build sand castles and write our names in the sand. Then we had a race back to my house and we played on the swings. That night we made a giant hut in our lounge and we put our mattresses under it. That was the last time I ever saw her. Then I flashed back to the present. I could feel tears rolling down my face. I went back to the kitchen where my parents were. I could tell my parents knew something I didn’t, I asked them what it was but they said it was a huge surprise.

That night I was lying in my bed when I heard someone knocking on the door. I said “I’ll get it” I went to the door when I got there my family was standing there. I asked why they had such a big smile’s on their face they told me to open the door. I opened it and Zoey and her family were standing there. She had a beautiful rose in her hand. “Surprise!!!” everyone yelled, I started to cry. “What are use doing here,” I asked “we came back to see you” Zoey replied. “How long are you here,” I asked Zoey replied “we are moving back”, I screamed and gave her a hug, “please don’t move away again,” I said.

Convincing people to stop using plastic

In class, we have been learning about plastic in our ocean, how we can stop plastic pollution, and how it is affecting our sea life. This plastic is getting into our ocean and our sea life are mistaking these plastics for food and eating it. Eventually, that fish will end up on someone's dinner plate. Seabirds are also getting this plastic and feeding it to there baby birds. Sea life will eventually die from starvation after digesting the rubbish they ate.   

Information you can share online

I’ve been learning how to make a google draw and what you can share online. It shows you things you can share online and somethings you shouldn’t. I enjoyed creating and using different shapes to use for text boxes. Next time I will try and extend on some other things you can share online.
